Police on the island of Chios identified a young man who is alleged to have defrauded a woman on the island, extracting thousands of euros from her over the telephone by impersonating a bank employee.

Police from the Chios Subsection for Crime Investigation and Resolution have traced a 22-year-old who is alleged to have defrauded a woman on the island and extracted €5,600 from her. The incident had occurred approximately twelve months ago.
According to reports from ertnews.gr, the young man is accused of presenting himself with false credentials as an employee of a banking institution. Through a telephone call, he managed to convince the victim that there was a problem with her account and obtained access to her financial data.
Following this, the sum of €5,600 was withdrawn from the victim's account. The money ended up in a bank account linked to the 22-year-old, who now faces legal sanctions.
The investigation by prosecuting authorities showed that the call to the woman was made through a telephone line registered under details of a foreign national from a third country. This is the "ghost person" method, which is used by criminal groups to cover their tracks and make it difficult to locate them.
The 22-year-old was identified following thorough investigation and charges have been brought against him. Police are now investigating whether he was also involved in other similar frauds in the area.
