Crete: 43-year-old tenant confesses to murder of Stavroula – buried her in field
After 22 days of anguish, the mystery of the disappearance of 45-year-old Stavroula Leventaki in Chania reached a tragic conclusion. The 43-year-old man who lived as a tenant in her home confessed to the prosecuting authorities that he killed her and hid her in a plot of agricultural land that he maintained in the wider area.
According to reporting from MEGA TV, the suspect claimed that the victim visited the house where he lived. There, as he alleged, a heated quarrel broke out regarding damage to the property. He stated that he struck the unfortunate woman on the head with a bottle, knocked her down, and subsequently stabbed her with a knife.
Immediately after, as he described, he immobilised the victim by tying her limbs with tape and covering her mouth with adhesive tape. He loaded the body into his vehicle and travelled a distance of approximately ten kilometres to his properties in Vatolakka, where he buried her at a location near a cannabis cultivation.
Officers who arrived at the site indicated by the perpetrator found the remains of the 45-year-old. The body bore multiple wounds from a sharp object to the chest and head injuries. The victim was bound and with her mouth covered.
The motives for the act appear to be related to personal differences. The 43-year-old is said to have requested the end of their relationship, as he had met another partner. Stavroula, according to information, threatened him with revelations to his wife, something that provoked the outburst of violence.
Throughout the investigation, the perpetrator maintained a pretence of innocence. He appeared on television programmes and to journalists, claiming they had been friends. He even had the audacity to involve a relative of the victim in the investigation.
However, forensic findings betrayed him. Traces of blood were found on electrical appliances, on the floor, on cleaning products, and in his car, confirming the suspicions of the police officers who had focused on him from the beginning.
The accused is expected to appear before the judicial authorities on Monday, facing charges of premeditated murder.
