A 49-year-old livestock breeder in Heraklion, Crete lost his life under unclear circumstances, with authorities now revising their initial assessment.
Alexandros Daskalakis was admitted to hospital with severe head injuries. Despite doctors' efforts, he succumbed days later. His relatives disputed from the outset that it was a fall or a traffic accident.
The autopsy revealed multiple fractures across the entire head, something that does not fit with a simple fall. Authorities are now investigating whether someone struck him with some object.
His sister, Anna, came forward publicly and spoke about her brother's character. She emphasised that the family wants to know the truth. "It is one thing to think that someone you love had an accident and another to learn that they were killed," she said.
Significant assistance in the investigation was provided by the victim's brother-in-law, who searched on his own and found items belonging to the 49-year-old. A female neighbour who runs a café recognised a bag, a coffee cup and other personal items that had been discarded in a field. The red bag was what made her certain.
People in the area speak of tension that has lasted for years. There are disagreements over properties and sheepfolds. Many remain silent out of fear their fields might be burnt or their animals stolen. "We are afraid to speak. Whoever opens their mouth has problems," they say.
Police officers in Heraklion are trying to reconstruct what the unfortunate man did in his final hours before he was found covered in blood. Questions remain unanswered and the investigation continues.
