A 71-year-old woman is being treated at Ierapetra Hospital following an attack by her partner on Tuesday afternoon. The perpetrator was arrested by police from the Ierapetra Police Station.

A 71-year-old woman was taken to Ierapetra Hospital on Tuesday afternoon (22/9) following an incident of violence in the city centre. According to Ta Nea, her partner was arrested shortly afterwards by officers from the local Police Station.
The attack reportedly occurred around 7:00 p.m. Witness accounts being examined by authorities state that the man struck the elderly woman with punches to the face and other parts of her body. Neighbours witnessed the incident and immediately alerted police and the ambulance service.
Officers from Ierapetra Police Station arrived at the scene and proceeded to arrest the perpetrator, who is being held at the station. The 71-year-old, a Bulgarian national, is being treated at the local hospital.
The preliminary investigation is ongoing. Depending on the evidence that emerges, the case is expected to be referred to the Domestic Violence Department of the Lasithi Police Directorate in Agios Nikolaos.
Residents of the area have reported that the 71-year-old and her partner had been living in recent weeks in an abandoned two-storey building on Ethnikis Antistaseos Street, near the "Giorgos Dialektakis" children's playground, along with other people. They report frequent tensions and incidents of disturbing the peace, and claim that the property has neither electricity nor water supply.
Relevant departments of the Ierapetra Municipal Authority are expected to carry out an inspection of the building to establish the living conditions and examine whether further action is required. The investigation into the assault incident is continuing.
