Human trafficking ring in Heraklion uncovered following rape report

A report of rape filed by a 28-year-old Romanian woman led to the exposure of a human trafficking ring in Heraklion, Crete, according to Newsit.gr. Authorities are investigating cases of procuring, human trafficking, domestic violence and rape against a 32-year-old Romanian man whom police are seeking.

The report was filed on Wednesday, 30 September at the Heraklion Unit for the Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes. The 28-year-old accused her partner, the 32-year-old, of forcing her into prostitution at Heraklion hotels from August 2025 onwards and extorting money from her. She also accused him of physical violence and rape.

According to neakriti.gr sources, police had already made arrests of individuals accused of bringing young women from Romania, holding them in conditions of captivity and forcing them into prostitution at hotels and private residences in Heraklion.

The case with documents and arrests

A central element of the investigation is the possession of the 28-year-old's personal documents. She initially reported that the 32-year-old held her identity card. He, however, told police that the document was in the hands of a 48-year-old Romanian man, owner of a transport company.

The 32-year-old attempted to retrieve the identity card by visiting the 48-year-old, where he met the latter's 70-year-old mother. According to his report, the woman demanded money to return the document and also demanded his identity card as a "guarantee".

The 32-year-old reported these incidents to police, which further widened the scope of the investigation. A search of the 70-year-old woman's residence yielded the 32-year-old's identity card, a sum of money and personal documents belonging to third parties. Police arrested both the 70-year-old woman and her 73-year-old husband.

The role of taxi driver and connections

A Romanian taxi driver is also alleged to have participated in the ring, whose role, according to the investigation, was to transport the women to meeting points — at hotels and private residences.

Authorities are examining the possibility that the operation was not limited to Heraklion, but that women were transported to other areas of Crete as well. Investigators are also exploring possible connections between the network and Romania.

The Heraklion Unit for the Prosecution and Investigation of Crimes has indications that the ring may have forced other women into prostitution besides the 28-year-old who filed a complaint. The investigation is ongoing, aimed at fully mapping the criminal structure.

The 28-year-old had the option of activating a panic button following her report of violence; however, according to neakriti.gr sources, she chose not to proceed with this measure. The 32-year-old ring leader remains at large and is the subject of a manhunt by authorities.
