Kypseli: Mother of 43-year-old speaks – "I never told him to kill"

The mother of the man arrested for the murder of an infant in Kypseli denies any responsibility, whilst the investigation focuses on knife wounds.

"No one wants to bring such a child into the world" – says the mother of the accused

The mother of the 43-year-old arrested for the horrifying murder of an infant in Kypseli spoke publicly, rejecting any responsibility for her son's actions. As Naftemporiki reports, the woman states that she is experiencing this tragedy entirely alone, having lost her husband.

"The world judges me for what kind of mother I am, but I bear no responsibility. I never told him to kill, nor to do harm," she stated characteristically. She invokes her long absence from Greece — she lives permanently in Germany and claims she has not visited the country for twelve years. "How can I know what he does back in the homeland? He's not a small child, he's a 43-year-old man," she added.

However, the report that she can no longer remember her grandchild raises serious questions, despite her written comments appearing below photographs of the infant on social media.

The forensic question

The focus of the investigation has shifted: from the discovery of the infant's body in deep freeze, the authorities' attention has now turned to the manner of death and the cause of the multiple knife wounds.

The 43-year-old claims that the knife wounds were inflicted after the infant had already died and frozen, when he attempted to remove a crust of ice from the body with a knife. According to information available so far, this account is not consistent with forensic findings.

The authorities are examining evidence suggesting that the nearly 20 wounds — mainly on the back — were inflicted whilst the child was still alive and are directly connected to his death.

Contradictory statements from parents

Meanwhile, investigators are attempting to clarify the contradictory accounts given by both parents regarding the circumstances of death. From what has become known from their statements, different descriptions appear regarding who was in the house and who was present at the moment the infant died.

A common thread of their claims remains that the baby was not murdered, but succumbed to pathological causes, and that the body was subsequently kept frozen for years.
