Port authorities and officials of the Independent Authority of Public Revenue carried out a significant seizure in Volos, discovering a large quantity of undeclared fuel in a cargo vessel that had docked at the port.
The ship, which flew the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis, had declared its cargo as metal cylinders. However, during an inspection conducted on the basis of risk assessments and with the assistance of the operations centre of DEOS, it was established that in its tanks there were an additional 10.4 tonnes — namely 12,280 litres — of marine diesel without any legal accompanying documentation.
According to the responsible authorities, this phenomenon represents a common tactic of groups operating in the illegal fuel trade. The quantities are falsely recorded as consumed during voyages, resulting in the creation of hidden stocks that are then supplied illegally to the market, to the detriment of legitimate shipping companies.
After confirmation of the violation, those responsible submitted a request for a departure ban to the Central Port Authority of Volos. They seized the entire illegal stockpile and calculated the corresponding customs penalties, which amount to €8,855.76.
Investigations are continuing in order to identify other individuals who may have been involved in this particular chain of illegal trafficking.
