Eleusis: 18-year-old surrenders – serious charges for 22-year-old

On Saturday afternoon, the 18-year-old wanted in connection with the knifing of a 32-year-old man in Eleusis voluntarily surrendered to authorities, appearing at the Evelpides police headquarters with his lawyer at the very moment proceedings were underway for his co-accused, the 22-year-old. According to reports from To Vima, the case is developing rapidly following an exclusive video-document published by the newspaper, containing footage of the altercation, the knife attack behind a tree and the escape of the two young men on a motorcycle.

The 22-year-old had surrendered earlier, on Friday evening, to the Security Service. The two accused are alleged to have carried out the attack on Thursday afternoon on Konstantinoupoleos Street, with the result that the 32-year-old suffered serious injuries to the thigh from a knife.

Attempted murder charge

The Prosecutor of the Court of First Instance brought criminal charges against the 22-year-old for attempted murder with intent through joint participation, illegal possession of weapons, carrying weapons and violation of weapons legislation, having assessed the evidence from the preliminary investigation dossier. The case was referred to an investigating magistrate, before whom the 22-year-old is called to make his defence.

During a search of his residence, police officers found two stilettos, a knuckle duster, an anti-asphyxiation mask, a flare, as well as material with nationalist content.

Conflicting claims

According to information, the 22-year-old maintains in his statement that the victim attacked first, and that during the altercation it was the 18-year-old who struck the 32-year-old with the knife. Additionally, the 22-year-old is reported to have filed a complaint against the 32-year-old for false accusation and dangerous bodily harm. The claims made by the 18-year-old are not yet known.

The 32-year-old, who is being treated in stable condition at Tzanio Hospital, has stated to authorities that the attack against him was motivated by politics. Specifically, he reported that the perpetrators held him responsible for publicising photographs from an earlier altercation between far-right individuals and anti-fascists in the area, adding however that they had confused him with someone else.

Known to authorities with history of violence

The two accused are reported to be active in far-right circles. According to police sources, they are known to authorities for incidents of hooligan violence in the past. In particular, the 22-year-old has been arrested previously in cases involving weapons and narcotics.

The investigating procedure is underway in full, with the aim of clarifying the circumstances of the attack. The victim is expected to file a civil claim in the trial.
