Knife attack on Mandra police station – attacker seriously wounded

A 31-year-old entered the Mandra police station on the afternoon of Friday, 4 September, holding a knife, threatened police officers and was ultimately shot by one of them. According to Ta Nea, the man is hospitalised at Thriaseio Hospital in critical condition and is expected to undergo surgery due to a penetrating wound to his chest and abdomen.

"Shoot, why won't you shoot me?"

Eyewitnesses who were present at the station at the time to obtain identity documents describe moments of terror. "We heard police officers shouting at each other 'if you have a gun, take it out, bring it'. This man broke down the door because the officer was holding it shut to prevent him from entering. When he came in, he smashed the window and the officer was cut," they reported.

According to the same accounts, the 31-year-old reached the first floor of the building, where he continued to move menacingly towards the officer. "The officer had his gun trained on him, and the man told him 'shoot, shoot, shoot, why won't you shoot me?'. The officer told him 'drop the knife, calm down' and the man kept moving closer to stab him. The officer was forced to shoot him," the witnesses describe.

Giorgos Kalliakmanis stated on Live News that before entering the building, the 31-year-old had reportedly threatened with a knife both a man who was standing outside the station.

According to reporting by Vasilis Lampropoulos on Live News, the 31-year-old's actions appear to have been vengeful in nature. During 2025 he had been involved in a series of incidents. On 28 April 2025 he had attempted suicide and was subsequently admitted to Dromokaitio Hospital. On 28 October 2025 he is reported to have insulted and threatened his neighbours using an air gun, resulting in his arrest and being brought before the courts.

On 9 December 2025 he was arrested again under domestic violence legislation, following an incident involving his partner and her mother in Acharnes. According to reports, he had gone to their residence holding a knife and is reported to have threatened them. The two women had previously requested that he be subjected to involuntary psychiatric examination, resulting in his hospitalisation at "G. Gennimatas" Hospital.
