Body of 90-year-old in basement of house – 68-year-old daughter admits to burial

The body of a 90-year-old woman was found in the basement of a house in Marathon, concealed in a bag, following a complaint made by the victim's granddaughter. According to In.gr, the granddaughter had reported to the authorities 15 days ago that she had not seen her grandmother for more than a decade.

The 68-year-old daughter of the victim and her son were taken to the police station. Officers initially searched the property's yard — digging even near the foundations — without result. The body was ultimately discovered inside the building itself, in the basement space.

"Because I had no other job"

The 68-year-old spoke to MEGA and admitted to burying her mother with disarming simplicity. "She was not well in her mind. And somewhere she fell. I used to give her food, but I couldn't carry on," she said. And subsequently, referring to the burial: "I buried her" — in a manner that, according to those who followed the interview, revealed no awareness of the seriousness of the act.

On the financial motive, the woman was equally emphatic: she wanted to continue collecting her mother's pension. "Because I had no other job. I'm telling you the truth," she stated when asked why she did not report the death to the authorities.

When asked if she received help in transporting the body, she mentioned a worker: "The one we go shopping with."

Contradictory accounts over the years

The 90-year-old's son, the 68-year-old's brother, stated that he did not know what had happened. "She told me that I had arranged her and so on. I was with my father in Trikala, with him. I had scratched something… He was receiving some money. Yes, she hadn't told me either exactly what," he said.

The former husband of the 68-year-old reported that the woman had claimed her mother was in a nursing home in Penteli — an institution that, according to information in the case, was never located. Family members describe a woman with serious problems who for years gave different accounts of the elderly woman's fate.

Critical questions for the authorities

The police authorities are now called upon to answer a series of critical questions: exactly when did the 90-year-old die, what was the cause of death, who knew of her death, and for how long was the pension collected without legal entitlement.

The case began to unravel when the victim's granddaughter approached the authorities, noting that she had had no contact with her grandmother for more than ten years. The subsequent investigation ultimately led to the discovery of the body in the basement.
