Thriller in Marathon: Woman buried mother in garden to collect her pension
A woman approximately 68 years old admitted to authorities that she buried her mother — a woman over 90 years old — in the garden of their house in Marathon, East Attica, whilst continuing to receive her pension without ever reporting her death to the Social Security Authority (EFKA). According to Newsit.gr, the elderly woman's death is estimated to have occurred approximately 10 years ago.
The case was revealed when the elderly woman's granddaughter contacted the Hellenic Police (ELAS) and reported that she had no contact with her grandmother for a long time. Investigations were immediately launched to clarify the elderly woman's fate.
Police officers called in for questioning the elderly woman's daughter, as well as her 45-year-old grandson, who both lived together in the detached house. The daughter admitted to the burial, but could not — or would not — indicate the exact location: "I don't remember where I buried her," she repeatedly told police officers who pressed her to speak.
ELAS officers with excavation equipment arrived at the house and began digging, without having located the body at the time of publication. The police officers even requested spades from neighbours to continue the search.
The daughter and grandson were taken to the New Makri Police Department for questioning and the filing of a case for referral to the prosecutor. They were released.
Neighbours who spoke to Newsit.gr reported that they could not remember when they last saw the elderly woman — "certainly many years ago," said one of them characteristically. They reported that they did not have particular contact with the daughter, describing her as "eccentric and strange". Another neighbour, who has lived in the area since 2012, said that he only saw the mother and son at the house, whilst the grandson came and went from Thessaloniki.
Witness statements from neighbours have also come under police investigation, who reported seeing the grandson moving about in a suspicious manner, carrying bags.
