On Friday, 10 July 2026, in the settlement of Vrana in Marathon, police arrested a 21-year-old woman. The charge brought against her concerns arson with intent, as she is alleged to have set fire to dry grass and low vegetation using an open flame.
According to Newsit.gr, the fire that broke out destroyed approximately 350 square metres before firefighters were able to bring it under control. An investigation by inquiry officials led to the identification of the suspect, who was arrested in flagrante delicto.
The case is being handled by the specialised unit for arson offences, and the public prosecutor has been informed. The file remains open as evidence collection continues.
According to official Fire Service data, from the beginning of the year until 9 July, 547 administrative penalties have been imposed, with a combined value exceeding €707,000. During the same period, there have been 174 arrests. The overwhelming majority of incidents have been related to negligence, whilst 14 cases have involved deliberate actions.
The Fire Service is sending a message to citizens to be particularly careful, given that most flare-ups result from human negligence. It also calls for the avoidance of any activity that could cause ignition, especially during the fire prevention period.
