Beos against referees and Brignoli: complaint filed with prosecutor over Volos–AEK
Volos Mayor Achilleas Beos alleged excessive betting on the double result and announced he would file a complaint with the prosecutor against the referees.
Beos takes case to prosecutor over Volos–AEK: "Millions of euros on the double"
Volos Mayor Achilleas Beos announced a complaint to the prosecutor regarding the Volos–AEK match immediately after the game ended, according to In.gr. Beos alleged excessive betting on the result and called on the prosecutor to investigate possible involvement by referee Polychronis and VAR official Tzilos.
"Today, according to information, millions of euros were wagered, a massive volume of money, on the AEK double. I am making a complaint. Tomorrow I will submit a report to the prosecutor, he must investigate it, to determine whether Tzilos and Polychronis were involved in this incident," Beos stated characteristically.
Challenging the penalty and allegations of match-fixing
The mayor strongly disputed the referee's decision to award a penalty in AEK's favour. "There is no penalty whatsoever. Today Jovic put on a carnival mask and dressed up as a monkey and got a monkey penalty. It is a disgrace for AEK to win like this," he emphasised. He added that the head of the Hellenic Football Federation, Lanouá, "a new upstart who came to Greece," should sideline the two referees until the investigation is completed.
During the match, Beos had already posted two messages on social media. In the first he wrote: "Once again we are witnessing match-fixing. Before the offside decision is made there is a crystal-clear dive – a penalty, which both Polychronis and Tzilos turn a blind eye to. Shame on you." In the second post he noted: "I have been informed that a lot of money was wagered on the double in this particular match. Tzilos and Polychronis should be investigated by the prosecutor, insofar as they are involved."
Incident with Brignoli at the end
Beos also referred to the incident he had with AEK goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli after the match ended. According to him, he approached his son, who was in a state of distress, and then the Italian goalkeeper attacked him from behind.
"I went to get my son because he was in a state of distress, he is a small child, he thought his team had been wronged and he was right to think so. From behind came a football scoundrel named Brignoli, he attacked me and the child. Shame on him," Beos stated. He called on the sports prosecutor to examine video footage from the cameras and determine whether a penalty should be imposed on Brignoli.
Announcement of complaint filing for Monday
Beos added that his Volos team "rose to the occasion" and played "competitive football" against AEK. He reiterated his intention to file a complaint with the prosecutor on Monday, 21 September, requesting an investigation into possible involvement by the referees in the sums of money which, according to his claims, were bet on the match.
