Mylopotamos, Rethymno: 10 arrests for drugs, subsidy fraud and livestock theft
Ten people were arrested in Mylopotamos following a months-long investigation by the Rethymno Drug Prosecution Unit. Cannabis, vehicles and subsidy-related documents were seized.
Ten arrests in Mylopotamos — cannabis, livestock subsidies and theft at centre of investigation
Ten people were arrested in Mylopotamos, Rethymno, following an extended police operation by the Rethymno Drug Prosecution Unit, according to Dikastiko.gr. The arrestees — eight Greeks and two foreign nationals — face charges, depending on the case, including criminal organisation, fraud relating to livestock subsidies, drug trafficking, unlawful possession of weapons, tax evasion, theft, damage to others' property and livestock theft.
Cannabis plantation and extensive seizures
During searches of residences, sheepfolds and other locations, police identified a cannabis plantation containing 11 plants up to three metres in height. In addition, 995 grammes of cannabis, 1,850 euros in cash, two precision scales, three knives and 18 mobile phones were seized, along with numerous documentary evidence.
The seizures also included seven cargo vehicles, one passenger car and one piece of construction equipment.
Fraud involving livestock subsidies
A significant part of the investigation concerns possible fraud against the agricultural subsidy system. Police are examining cases in which the declared numbers of livestock do not match the animals found during inspections. Additionally, authorities are investigating an incident in which animals belonging to one member of the group were allegedly registered as the property of another member in order to obtain subsidies.
Damage to olive trees and machinery theft
Authorities are also investigating damage caused to olive trees and to a piece of construction equipment, as well as machinery theft. The preliminary investigation into all cases continues under the Rethymno Drug Prosecution Unit.
