New WhatsApp scam infects phones – what to do if you opened the message
A message on WhatsApp, seemingly from a known contact, asks users to vote in a dance competition and infects their device.
WhatsApp scam using dance competition pretext targets Greek users
According to Proto Thema, a new electronic scam is circulating via WhatsApp targeting users in Greece. The malicious message appears to come from a known contact of the recipient and asks them to vote in a dance competition, supposedly to help a friend's daughter win.
By opening the link contained in the message, the user's device becomes infected. The trick is based on the trust one feels when the message appears to come from someone in one's circle.
If you received such a message, Proto Thema recommends not opening any link it contains. If you have already opened it, immediate scanning of the device with reputable security software and changing passwords for critical applications is advised.
