Defendant claims psychiatric disability over attack on taxi driver in Nea Ionia

A 67% psychiatric disability is being claimed by the 35-year-old accused of attacking a 54-year-old taxi driver in Nea Ionia, according to Newsit.gr. The defendant appeared before a prosecutor on 5 February 2026, who brought felony charges against him for aggravated intentional bodily harm.

During his statement to the prosecutor, the 35-year-old argued that he suffers from serious mental health problems and that the attack began with an altercation that broke his glasses, causing him to lose control. He also stated that he would submit medical documents proving his disability.

According to the case facts, the perpetrator not only attempted to strangle the woman but also bit her and severed her ear. The 54-year-old testified that the defendant was beating her in a frenzy because she could not find a signal to make payment via POS.

The injured woman remains hospitalised, dealing with both physical injuries — including the serious ear wound and scratches on her body — and psychological shock from the attack. The prosecutor also brought misdemeanour charges for making threats.
