A 72-year-old woman, Vagia Nestura, lost her life following an arson attack that occurred in the foyer of an apartment building in Thessaloniki, where her daughter, New Democracy politician Aphroditi Nestura, resided.
The incident took place on 1 July 2026, between 5:53 and 6:44 in the morning. According to a medical statement from Hippocrates Hospital in Thessaloniki, published by the website efsyn.gr, the unfortunate woman was admitted to the Emergency Department in an exceptionally serious condition. She was intubated and transferred immediately to the Adult Intensive Care Unit. She was hospitalised with extensive burns covering 80 per cent of her body surface area, multi-organ failure in a severe condition, and died at 18:50.
Aphroditi Nestura, who was initially treated in the Emergency Department, was found to have suffered extensive first and second-degree burns mainly on the upper and lower limbs, as well as inhalation injury and laryngeal oedema. She is hospitalised in the Fifth Surgical Clinic of Aristotle University in a stable condition.
The politician's father, Panagiotis Nestura, was also treated in the Emergency Department with symptoms of severe dyspnoea, cough and acute laryngeal pain. His condition is characterised as moderate severity with mild vocal cord oedema due to smoke inhalation. He is hospitalised in a stable condition in the Pulmonology Department and is expected to be discharged soon.
Additionally, two other residents of the same apartment building, a woman and a man, were treated in the Emergency Department. They were provided with first aid by pulmonologists and are expected to be discharged shortly from the Pulmonology Department.
The administration of Hippocrates Hospital expressed its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and to her relatives. The medical and nursing teams remain on alert and continue close monitoring of the patients.
