Mother of MP Nestor killed in arson attack in Thessaloniki
A residence in Thessaloniki was attacked with flammable materials in the early morning hours of 1 July. The fire that broke out claimed the life of Vaia Nestor, who was the mother of New Democracy MP Aphrodite Nestor.
In a statement on social media on Sunday 5 July, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed the incident. He stressed that there is no ideological justification for such acts of violence that result in loss of life. Mr Mitsotakis promised that those responsible would be found and referred to justice.
At the same time, the Prime Minister called on political parties to reflect on the way public discourse is shaped. He argued that when political confrontation becomes hostile and divisive, it creates fertile ground for criminal behaviour.
Mr Mitsotakis compared the perpetrators to members of extremist groups from the past, pointing out that both 17 November and Golden Dawn were effectively dealt with by the authorities. He assured that the government remains determined to combat criminality, without compromise.
