Autopsy reveals murder of 25-year-old in Igoumenitsa: 15 stab wounds across body

According to cnn.gr, coroner Ioannis Aiviatidis identified 15 stab wounds across the body of 25-year-old biologist Penelope during the autopsy-necrotomy completed at the Coroner's Service in Ioannina.
Two deep stab wounds to the neck proved fatal, causing severe haemorrhage. Additionally, the 25-year-old sustained seven stab wounds to the back, resulting in damage to the liver, left lung and stomach. Wounds to the hands and shin suggest she attempted to defend herself. The knife, a bayonet-type blade, had a 7.5-centimetre edge.
The attack took place on a cycling path in Igoumenitsa. The victim had moved to the area approximately eighteen months earlier and worked as a biologist. She had separated from the 27-year-old suspect almost a month before the crime.
The 27-year-old initially claimed that four people attacked them during a robbery. Police officers identified contradictions in his statement, and subsequently the suspect is reported to have verbally confessed to the act, saying he "lost it". He is hospitalised under guard with a chest wound which, according to reports, he inflicted upon himself.
An investigating magistrate and prosecutor visited the hospital on Monday afternoon for the required judicial procedures. The suspect has been given a deadline to enter his defence on Thursday morning, 24 September.
Charges have been brought against him for premeditated homicide, domestic violence, and violations of weapons and narcotics legislation. The latter charge relates to three tranquilliser tablets found in his small bag. He requested the appointment of a defence lawyer, citing financial hardship.
The 27-year-old has no convictions on his criminal record. In the past he had attracted the attention of authorities for violation of firecracker legislation, whilst as a minor he was arrested for theft. In 2024 he had been brought in for identity verification.
