Video footage released to the public shows 45-year-old Stavrula Leventaki walking towards the house rented by the 43-year-old man on the afternoon of 30 May. In the footage, the woman is carrying bags with supplies. That meeting proved fatal.
On the same morning, the man who admitted to killing Leventaki was transferred to Chania courts wearing a bulletproof vest and under heavy police guard. He was charged with premeditated murder, use and possession of a weapon, and unauthorised burial. The defendant requested an adjournment and was given until Friday to enter his defence.
Evidence gathered during the investigation shows that for 22 days the 43-year-old man appeared publicly and spoke about the victim's disappearance, at the same time that authorities were searching for the woman. Conversations he had with his wife before his arrest, when the case was still being treated as a disappearance, reveal his psychological state. He reportedly told her that he was in hiding and feared prison, while his wife reassured him by saying that there was no incriminating evidence.
The murder has shocked the local community in Crete and has provoked a wave of outrage. The judicial authorities are continuing to examine all aspects of the case.
