Taxi driver in Nea Ionia, Volos attacked with broomstick – wrist fracture

A serious incident occurred on the morning of Friday 18 September at the taxi rank outside Taxiarchon Cemetery in Nea Ionia, Volos. According to Ta Nea, a 52-year-old taxi driver alleged that he was attacked with a broomstick and suffered a wrist fracture.
According to the driver's own account, the incident began when a Roma man asked to get into his taxi. The 52-year-old refused, citing that he knew this particular passenger did not pay for his journeys.
A few minutes later, according to the same account, the man's son appeared at the scene, allegedly moving aggressively towards the driver. The young man temporarily withdrew, returned holding a broken broomstick, and struck the 52-year-old.
"He broke the broomstick and moved the tip towards me, the sharp point hitting me in the stomach. The father was trying to pull him back and hit the father too. At some point he hit my hand and broke it," the driver stated to magnesianews.gr.
With the arrival of other colleagues at the taxi rank, the two men left the scene. The injured driver went to Volos Police Headquarters to file a complaint, accompanied by the president of the Volos Taxi Owners Association "Agios Christophoros", Efthokimios Paschalidis.
In parallel, according to information, consideration is being given to organising a gathering of taxi drivers outside police headquarters in response to the incident. The exact circumstances of the attack are expected to be investigated by the authorities.
