Relatives of Nikíta Gemístou, a 20-year-old who became a homicide victim on 5 May in Malevízi, Crete, have submitted a written request to investigate possible criminal and disciplinary responsibility of police officers at the local station. The victim's family claim that they had approached the authorities multiple times before the fatal incident occurred, without receiving the necessary support.
According to reporting by MEGA TV, the victim's sister contended that her brother is "another example of what can happen when police officers do not properly fulfil their role". Family members reportedly visited the Malevízi police station repeatedly seeking intervention.
The victim was killed by a 54-year-old man, who is being held in provisional custody along with his partner. The alleged perpetrator reportedly had repeatedly caused the victim's family concern through threats and intimidation before the crime.
The case comes to be added to a series of incidents in which families of victims are alleging inaction by the authorities prior to the commission of crimes. In April 2024, a 28-year-old woman was murdered by her former partner outside the Agíon Anargýron police station, after she had approached four police officers for help without result. In December 2022, a minor aged 16 lost his life to police fire in western Thessaloníki following a pursuit over the non-payment of 20 euros for petrol.
The mother of the victim in Árgo, who was killed by police fire, also expressed anger over a similar case. "Yet again, for the umpteenth time, the responsible police officers do not know how to use their weapons," she stated.
The complaint from the Gemístou family is now under examination by the competent authorities.
