Discovery of eight migrants in Lykovrysi – paid up to €17,000 for their trafficking
Eight foreign nationals, aged between 17 and 27, were identified in the early hours of 29 August in Lykovrysi, according to Naftemporiki. Police officers from the DIAS unit, during a patrol, stopped a suspicious vehicle in which several people were travelling.
Following searches in the wider area, the eight were located, who did not possess the necessary documents for lawful residence in the country. They were taken to the Foreigners Division of Attica, where the preliminary investigation was taken over by the Migration Management Department.
From the investigation it emerged that the eight had entered on 27 August from a point on the Greece–Turkey border and were immediately handed over to smugglers. They were initially transported to Thessaloniki, where they remained in a "safe house", and subsequently to Athens, with the final destination being the United Kingdom and Sweden.
For their trafficking, they paid amounts of between €5,000 and €17,000 each, according to the Hellenic Police. A case file was drawn up against them for violation of the legislation on foreigners, while procedures were initiated for their registration and mapping in view of their return to their countries of origin. The arrested individuals were taken to the competent prosecutor.
