According to Dikastiko.gr, on the afternoon of Wednesday, 23 September, on Sophocles Street in Nikaia, a 49-year-old man held his 44-year-old partner hostage for approximately two hours inside their flat, threatening both her and the police officers who arrived at the scene.
Shortly before 19:00, a resident of the surrounding area notified the immediate response service, reporting that a man was threatening and holding his wife inside the house. Strong police forces were immediately dispatched to the scene and the area was cordoned off.
EKAM police officers, equipped with protective gear, carried out a raid on the apartment block, as the 49-year-old was reportedly threatening to cause an explosion. "He was saying that I want to die and take you with me, I want to plant a bomb so the police will come," the woman described, speaking to MEGA.
The 44-year-old reported that the hours preceding the intervention were particularly stressful. "For three or four days he didn't take his medication properly, he was upset, he was under extreme tension and, delirious, he was saying nonsense. I was terrified," she stated. As she described, her partner was in a state of tension for approximately three days: "He was shouting a lot for three days. That he would do one thing, that he would do another, he was picking fights with the police."
The officers waited for the right moment to act. As soon as it presented itself, they stormed the flat, first safely removed the 44-year-old and then restrained and arrested the 49-year-old. The man, who according to reports is dealing with psychiatric problems, was taken to a psychiatric clinic for compulsory admission.
