Hostage situation in Nikaia ends — without injuries
According to Ta Nea, the 44-year-old woman opened the door herself to police, allowing them to enter the flat on Sophocles Street, where she was with her 49-year-old partner. The operation concluded without injury.
The 49-year-old spoke to tanea.gr denying allegations of holding a hostage. "My woman is here next to me. They've had us here for 3 hours and they won't give us the paper, the warrant. I don't have a weapon and the police gathered here because someone complained about a disturbance of the peace," he stated characteristically.
The mobilisation of the authorities began following information about a domestic violence incident. According to initial reports, the 49-year-old did not permit the woman to leave the flat and had stated that he was armed.
Strong police forces deployed an operation around the building from early on, whilst a specialist negotiator was also called. Traffic police proceeded in parallel with traffic diversions at the intersection of Sophocles and Vournova Streets. Tensions de-escalated when police entered the flat and brought the incident to an end.
