A hostage situation in Nikaia ended positively when a 49-year-old man who was holding his 44-year-old wife captive was arrested by police following a negotiation operation.

The hostage situation in Nikaia ended on Wednesday (23/9) with the arrest of the perpetrator and the safe release of the hostage, according to ertnews.gr.
The incident began at approximately 18:00, when police were notified that a 49-year-old man was holding his 44-year-old wife against her will in a flat on Sophocleous Street. There was information that the man was armed.
Police forces immediately deployed an operation around the building, and a specialist negotiator from the police force also rushed to the scene. The negotiator gradually gained the confidence of the 49-year-old, who ultimately agreed to open the door. At the same time, the 44-year-old found the opportunity to allow the police officers herself to enter, who proceeded with the arrest of the perpetrator.
During the search carried out at the residence, no weapon was found. The couple is reported to have a history of psychiatric illness.
During the operation, traffic police had put in place diversions on the intersection of Sophocleous and Vournova streets.
