Bones found in basement in Marathon: Daughter and grandson referred to prosecutor
Human bones have been discovered in a storage facility at a residence in Marathon, believed to belong to an elderly woman who had been missing for a decade. Her daughter and grandson are being referred to the judicial authorities.
Marathon: Daughter and grandson referred to prosecutor over elderly woman's bones — her pension was being collected for ten years
A 68-year-old daughter and grandson of an elderly woman are expected to be brought before the judicial authorities following the discovery of human bones in a basement storage facility of a single-storey house in Marathon, according to In.gr.
The bones, believed to belong to the elderly woman, were found wrapped in plastic, papers and sheets in a basement storage space of the residence on Ithaca Street — on Friday morning. If the woman were alive today, she would be approximately 90 years old.
Ten years of concealing death
The two arrested individuals are being held on charges of failure to report the discovery of a corpse. At the same time, the investigation is turning to the possibility of fraud against the State: the elderly woman's death had not been reported and her pension is believed to have been paid for approximately one decade. An examination of banking records showed that her account remained active with transactions until August 2026.
During the investigation, the 68-year-old is believed to have admitted that her mother died approximately ten years ago and that her death was not reported so that pension payments would continue to be collected.
The garden search and the focus on the basement
Initially, the 68-year-old pointed to the garden of the house as a burial site. Teams with specialised machinery and excavators searched the entire garden without finding anything. The search was extended to the interior of the residence and the bones were eventually located in the basement storage facility. A specialist anthropologist was called to examine the findings.
Conflicting statements between the arrested individuals
The elderly woman's daughter claims that her mother died from natural causes due to her advanced age. Her grandson, for his part, denies knowing what had happened, claiming that his mother did not tell him where his grandmother was.
How the case came to light
The case began to unravel approximately two weeks ago, following a complaint from another granddaughter of the elderly woman — the daughter of the 68-year-old and sister of the second arrested individual. The woman told the authorities that she had lost all contact with her grandmother for approximately ten years and expressed suspicions about her fate.
Police officers searched the elderly woman's details in the EFKA database and established that her death had never been reported. At the same time, the authorities are investigating the relationships between family members, as well as any financial or inheritance disputes that may be connected to the complaint.
Laboratory test results expected
The laboratory tests are expected to determine, insofar as is feasible, the time and cause of death. For now, all possibilities remain open — including the possibility of criminal conduct.
Following the completion of the financial investigation and the release of laboratory results, a separate case file for fraud against the State is expected to be drawn up. The authorities are also expected to determine the total amount withdrawn from the elderly woman's account following her reported time of death.
