Patras: Three men arrested after attempted robbery of elderly man

Three men who had formed a gang to extort money from elderly people were arrested by police in Patras. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon.

The perpetrators used the well-known method of impersonating employees of the public power utility. They telephoned elderly people and, citing the danger of fire from electrical current leaks, asked them to hand over money and jewellery.

In one instance, an elderly man was persuaded to place 16,120 euros and jewellery in a bag and leave it outside his door. When the perpetrators went to collect it, the victim noticed them. They forcefully pushed the door and fled running.

Police officers from the Immediate Action Unit located the perpetrators' vehicle. The driver attempted to escape by driving at high speed in the wrong direction, but was eventually immobilised.

Following an operation with the assistance of the Achaia Police, the three men were found hiding in a farm with dense vegetation in Souli, Patras. They were arrested there.

A search of their vehicle found jewellery and the identity card of a fourth accomplice. Inside the victim's apartment building, police officers found the bag containing the money and jewellery hidden beneath an internal staircase, which were immediately returned to the elderly man.

Charges were filed against them for gang activity, theft and complicity. They were brought before the Prosecutor of the District Court of Achaia.
