Fraudsters in the Pella region attempted to deceive a 44-year-old man who serves in the ranks of the Greek Police, without knowing his professional status. The attempted fraud was carried out by telephone, using the well-known fraudulent tactic of a purported accountant, as reported by the Newspaper of Editors.

Specifically, a woman contacted the police officer by telephone, posing as his accountant and asked him to gather cash and jewellery, claiming that these items needed to be recorded in order to avoid a fine.

The police officer immediately realised it was a fraud and notified his colleagues. An operation was organised by the Criminal Investigation and Prosecution Department of the region, resulting in the arrest of a 39-year-old man who had an active arrest warrant and appeared to collect the money.

During his arrest, the 39-year-old attempted to escape on foot and resisted the police officers, pushing them back. He was eventually immobilised and arrested.

From the investigation of the case, it emerged that the same perpetrator, together with a female accomplice who has not yet been located, allegedly defrauded a 79-year-old elderly woman in Kilkis the previous week, using the same method. The sum of money extorted from the elderly woman amounted to 8,000 euros.

Additionally, the authorities established that the arrested man was driving a stolen motorcycle from Attica, which bore a forged registration plate. He had four outstanding court decisions against him, with total sentences comprising 10 years' imprisonment, 19 months' custody and a fine of 51,500 euros.

The female accomplice of the arrested man is being sought by the prosecution authorities. The 39-year-old was brought before the magistrate prosecutor of Pella, whilst the investigation into the case continues.
