An attempted fraud using the well-known fake accountant scam failed in Pella, as the victim selected by the perpetrators was a police officer. The 44-year-old man immediately understood what was happening and informed his colleagues, who waited for the businessman behind the fraud and arrested him in the act.
The day before, a woman working with the fraudsters contacted the 44-year-old by telephone, posing as his accountant. She asked him to collect cash and jewellery to avoid an alleged fine.
The police officer, recognising the familiar fraudulent tactic, cooperated with his colleagues from the Pella Department for Combating and Investigating Crime. When the 39-year-old arrived at the location to collect the money and valuables, authorities immobilised him. The man attempted to flee on foot and reacted violently, pushing the police officers.
The investigation revealed that the same suspect, together with another unidentified woman, allegedly defrauded a 79-year-old elderly woman in Kilkis the previous week using the same method. They obtained 8,000 euros from the elderly woman.
Additionally, police officers ascertained that the arrested man was driving a stolen motorcycle from Attica, which bore an apparently forged registration plate. Four court rulings were pending against him, with a total sentence of 10 years, 19 months' imprisonment and a fine of 51,500 euros.
