Five unheeded alarms, contradictions in witness statements, delayed call to ambulance service, cleaning of premises, data deletion and photographs found on the defendant doctor's mobile phone: these are the pieces of the puzzle that authorities are attempting to piece together in the case of Giorgos Mazownak's death, according to Newsit.gr.
Couple of doctors facing life imprisonment
The couple of doctors linked to the singer's death have been brought before the courts of Evelpidon following the upgrading of charges to manslaughter with potential malice—an offence that can result in a life sentence. Both deny the charges. The 56-year-old insists that the medical procedure is unconnected to the death of the popular artist.
Five alarms and 35 minutes without action
The plasma exchange machine activated alarms indicating a problem with venous pressure—possible blockage or malfunction in the blood return line. According to recorded data, the doctor repeatedly pressed "skip", ignoring the warnings. Three further alarms followed, while 35 minutes elapsed between these incidents and the call to ambulance service—a period during which Mazownak is reported to have already died.
Possible administration of substance causing intoxication
Authorities are investigating an additional scenario: police sources report that there is a strong possibility that the singer was administered a substance causing intoxication before the procedure began. No pharmaceutical substance that could have been used for this purpose was found at the clinic; however, the same sources characterise this scenario as "very likely". Confirmation is expected from the results of toxicological tests, which are estimated to be available in a few weeks.
The claim is strengthened, according to the same sources, by what the doctor is reported to have told Athens Police officers: that on the previous day Mazownak was in a state of "hyperexcitation" during the appointment, and on the day of treatment—Wednesday—he is reported to have been restless.
Defendant doctor claims he was absent
The 58-year-old doctor claims that he was not in the office at the moment Mazownak suffered cardiac arrest. Digital files show that at 16:05 an electronic referral was issued for a patient under his name. Two witnesses—a secretary and a patient—testified before the prosecutor that the doctor was notified after 16:00. "There is a category of patients who do not book appointments by telephone, but arrange them directly with the doctors and then inform me so I can record them," said the 28-year-old secretary.
Hydrotherapy the previous day—a combination that doctors characterise as prohibitive
Police reporter Vasilis Lampropoulos revealed on Mega that one day before his death, Mazownak had undergone hydrotherapy—intestinal irrigation—at the same clinic. This detail had also been mentioned by the defendant doctor in her statement.
According to doctors, the combination of hydrotherapy and plasma exchange is contraindicated: hydrotherapy causes severe changes in bodily fluids and loss of electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium. Plasma exchange removes and replaces large quantities of plasma. If the body is already dehydrated or has disturbed electrolytes, the risk of sudden blood pressure drop, hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias and haemodynamic instability is high.
Deleted photographs and the trousers that disappeared
As Newsit.gr had previously revealed, two photographs and a video were found on the 56-year-old doctor's mobile phone and subsequently deleted. The images, taken seconds apart at 14:44 and 14:45, depict Mazownak unconscious and wired to the plasma exchange machine, with his eyes closed and his head turned to the right. It has not been clarified whether the singer was already dead at that moment.
According to the photographs, Mazownak was wearing dark-coloured trousers, which can be seen from his right leg hanging from the chair. However, when ambulance personnel arrived at the location, the paramedics—as they have stated—found him wearing a T-shirt and underwear, without trousers. This finding suggests that someone removed the clothing from the artist after 14:45.
An additional question is raised by the presence of an olive-coloured blanket that appears in the photographs, which was subsequently not found at the location.
