Two detainees have been remanded in custody as part of an investigation into a network that defrauded the Payment Organisation. The sum allegedly obtained illegally is estimated at €2.5 million, with the scheme operating between 2019 and 2024.
A total of twelve people were taken into police custody in areas of Western Macedonia and Aetolia-Acarnania. The detainees are accused of submitting fraudulent financing applications, presenting fictitious details for cultivations and plots of land they purportedly owned or had leased.
According to case documents, a significant portion of the declared land parcels belonged to state agencies, municipalities, ministries, renewable energy companies, religious institutions, a psychiatric hospital and private law enterprises.
Among the twelve, two are now behind bars: an employee of a declarations reception office and a farmer. Three others were released on bail, including prohibitions on leaving the country and payment of guarantees ranging from five to fifteen thousand euros.
Additionally, a couple who are the parents of the person considered to be the mastermind of the group were released after immediately giving testimony, on condition that they do not travel abroad and with a guarantee of ten thousand euros each.
The statements of the remaining seven will continue shortly. As reported, the alleged leader of the organisation will be the last to give testimony. After all statements have been completed, the judicial officer and the prosecutor will decide on the further course of action for those involved.
The prosecuting authorities believe that the group operated in an organised manner, with each member having a specific role. The case is being investigated by a specially appointed European investigating magistrate.
