Ten organised supporters of football club Panathinaikos face serious charges including eight felonies and misdemeanours, among them forming a criminal organisation, possession of explosives and robbery.
Criminal prosecution against ten Panathinaikos supporters for eight felonies
Ten fans of the Panathinaikos football club, who had been brought in by officials from the Sports Violence unit, were brought before the Prosecutor of the Athens Court of First Instance. The judicial proceedings began on Thursday morning.
The charge against them is particularly serious. The ten men are accused of forming and participating in a group acting unlawfully, as well as unlawful possession and production of materials capable of causing explosions. They are also charged with aiding and abetting these offences.
The indictment further includes: causing serious injury to a person with accomplices, theft with use of force and under conditions of public gathering, dangerous bodily harm on a repeated basis, damage to third-party property with accomplices, assault in common with others, arson with accomplices, and trafficking of substances causing addiction on a large scale.
Some of these acts are being prosecuted in parallel under special provisions of the legislative framework governing sporting events. The members of the group had previously been arrested by specialised officers of the Greek police who oversee violent behaviour in sporting venues.
The case is now in the hands of the judiciary, with the accused facing serious charges ranging from organised unlawful conduct to use of explosives, violent actions and drug trafficking.
