Judicial authorities have decided to remand in custody a 28-year-old man, a Turkish national, who faces charges of manslaughter of a 25-year-old fellow countryman. The incident occurred on 13 June 2026 in the Exarcheia district in Athens.
The decision to detain the defendant was made with the consent of an investigative judge and prosecutor.
According to information that has emerged from the investigation, the alleged perpetrator is said to have undertaken the killing in exchange for a financial reward. The expected payment amounted to 1 million Turkish lire, which would have been paid to him by a criminal organisation based in Turkey.
During his hearing, the 28-year-old is said to have admitted his involvement in the crime. However, he claimed that he had acted under unbearable pressure and threats that were being made against his family in his homeland. He also claimed that during the act he was under the influence of psychotropic substances.
The defendant requested that he be subjected to a psychiatric examination.
