A 58-year-old man in Crete has been remanded in custody pending trial after facing serious charges relating to an assault on a minor. The victim is a boy aged only eight years old, a member of a family that was renting a residence from the accused.
The investigating magistrate and the prosecutor in Heraklion agreed to the provisional detention of the man following his appearance in court at midday on Friday, 3 July. The deadline he had previously received had expired and he was called to provide explanations for the acts attributed to him.
The incident is reported to have occurred on Monday, 30 June, according to the testimony of the boy's mother. The 58-year-old, as the owner of the house where the family was living, is alleged to have entered the premises in the presence of two children, aged eight and eleven years old, whilst their mother was absent.
According to what has emerged, the man is alleged to have attacked the younger child verbally and physically. The complaint states that he caused blows to the boy's face and subsequently attempted to suffocate him using a pillow, placing his life in danger.
Initially, the prosecution authorities had brought more serious charges. Following examination of the evidence by the prosecutor, the case was reviewed and the charges were amended to attempted murder.
The police and judicial authorities continue to investigate the case, examining all aspects of the incident and the evidence that has been gathered in the case file.
