24-year-old remanded for arson attack on Nestor family
Third arrest in connection with the attack that cost the life of 79-year-old Vagia Nestor. The young man denied any involvement and claimed he learned about the incident from television.
24-year-old remanded for arson attack on Nestor family
A 24-year-old man, to whom belongs the apartment that is alleged to have been used by the perpetrators of the arson on the block of flats where the Nestor family lived in Thessaloniki, was remanded in custody following his examination.
According to information from ERT, his examination before the judicial officer lasted more than sixty minutes. The suspect answered every question put to him, and had also prepared a written statement with his claims. In it he alleged that he has no acquaintance with the 29-year-old and the 26-year-old who had been arrested earlier for the same incident. He also stated that he learned about the incident from the media.
The accused maintained that he had given the keys to his residence to an acquaintance and had not returned to the house since late June. He claimed that he was completely unaware of how the keys passed into the hands of the two remanded detainees, attempting to distance himself from them.
Furthermore, the 24-year-old stated that he has no connection to anti-establishment circles, that he has no criminal history, and that he is doing very well in his studies. The judicial officers were not convinced by his claims and decided on his detention, as had occurred with the previous two arrested persons.
The investigation by the Counter-Terrorism Unit continues for the possible involvement of at least three additional persons. The competent authorities firmly believe that someone else was directing the actions of the perpetrators and are directing their investigation towards identifying this individual.
