A judicial official, in consultation with the competent prosecutor, decided to remand in custody a 28-year-old man, a Turkish national, who faces charges of intentional homicide. The victim was a 25-year-old fellow countryman, and the incident occurred on 13 June 2026 in the Exarchia area.
The prosecuting authorities believe that a death contract lay behind the crime. In return for carrying out the killing, the alleged perpetrator was to receive one million pounds from a criminal organisation based in Turkey.
During his statement before the authorities, the young man reportedly admitted to committing the act. However, he claimed that he acted under unbearable pressure and threats that he was receiving, as he alleged, against his own people from individuals of the same nationality. He added that at the time of the incident he was in a state affected by psychotropic substances.
The defendant requested that the authorities conduct a psychiatric examination in order to assess his mental state.
