The Rethymno Court of Appeal has decided that the 57-year-old livestock farmer should be sent to prison. He faces serious charges over the murder of Alexandros Daskalakis, president of the Apesokari community. The man is accused of orchestrating the crime, without being present at the scene of the murder.
Prior to today's decision, the accused had the right to move freely only within his home. His detention was deemed necessary following a disagreement that arose between the investigating magistrate handling the case and the prosecutor.
In the same case, two other individuals have already been sent to prison. These are the livestock farmer's 32-year-old son, as well as a 59-year-old who works as a shepherd. Both are accused of carrying out the murder.
The case was solved on 10 June, when police forces carried out a large operation in the Messara region. The investigation had begun months earlier, following the death of the 49-year-old community president.
The evidence that led to the arrests included witness statements, audiovisual material, as well as a coroner's report. The latter categorically ruled out the possibility that Daskalakis' death resulted from an accident.
