The Misdemeanour Court Council decided on the remand in custody of a 57-year-old former deputy mayor of Gortyna municipality, who is accused of complicity in the manslaughter of Apesokari community leader in Heraklion, Alexandros Daskalakis.
The case began on 1 March, when the 49-year-old community leader went to buy coffee and a toastie for his worker. According to the case file, he met with one or more persons and never returned. He had previously notified the authorities of a possible crime, describing specific disputes he had with livestock farmers in the area.
The forensic pathology report mentions a blow to the left clavicle and to the centre of the head, with the skull having suffered serious injuries. The victim was admitted to hospital with brain death and died on 22 March.
Already remanded in custody are the 32-year-old son of the 57-year-old, as the principal perpetrator, and a 59-year-old shepherd. The former deputy mayor had disagreed with the prosecutor during his statement on 14 June, when he was placed under house arrest.
The faction "Megali Gortyna" decided unanimously to expel him from its members, following a proposal by Mayor Michalis Kokolakis.
