Former Gortyns vice-mayor remanded in custody for community leader's murder
The Judicial Council decided to remand the 57-year-old former vice-mayor of the Gortyns municipality, who is accused of murdering 49-year-old community leader Alexandros Daskalakis. The decision was made as it was deemed that the conditions for his detention were met.
The victim, Alexandros Daskalakis, went missing on 1 March whilst at his field in Apesokari, Heraklion. He had gone to buy coffee and a toastie for his worker, but never returned to the work site. The products he had purchased were later found discarded on a dirt road in the area.
The 49-year-old returned to his home in a bad condition. He asked his wife and daughter to call his close friend, Spyros. When the latter arrived, Daskalakis was already showing serious symptoms, with loss of consciousness and bleeding from the nose. He was rushed to Venizeleio Hospital, where he was hospitalised in a comatose state until 22 March, when he succumbed to his injuries.
The findings of the forensic examination reveal a violent attack. Death was caused by heavy blows to the head and left collarbone, whilst the victim was standing. The violence of the attack was such that it caused traumatic brain injury with fractures at multiple points on the head.
In the same case, the 32-year-old son of the remanded former vice-mayor is already being held, who is identified as the direct perpetrator of the attack, as well as a 59-year-old shepherd who was employed by the two men.
The case file includes statements from the victim's circle. Daskalakis' close friend had informed the authorities of possible criminal activity before the 49-year-old even took his last breath, also referencing previous disputes the victim had with livestock farmers in the area over damage to crops.
The political group "Megali Gortynaâ€, to which the 59-year-old shepherd belonged, proceeded with his unanimous expulsion from its members, following a proposal by its leader and mayor of the area, Michalis Kokolakis.
The 57-year-old had given his statement before the investigating magistrate on 14 June. The investigating magistrate and prosecutor had disagreed at that time on the form of provisional detention, with the result that the final decision was taken by the competent Council.
