Remand in custody for attacker of taxi driver in Nea Ionia
A 35-year-old man has been remanded in custody after attacking a 54-year-old taxi driver in Nea Ionia, biting her on the ear until he severed it. According to the Newspaper of Editors, after the suspect's testimony, an investigating magistrate and prosecutor determined that the accused is a suspect in the commission of further offences.
The violent incident occurred at 1 a.m. on Demirdesiou Street. The 54-year-old had picked up the 35-year-old from Kypseli and was taking him to his destination when a dispute erupted over the payment method for the ride. "Essentially, a quarrel broke out between them regarding the method of settling the amount that was to be paid to the driver for that particular ride," said EL.AS. spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglídou on ERTnews.
Subsequently, the 35-year-old grabbed the driver by the neck and began biting her ear, with the result that he severed it. Despite the serious injury and the attacker's threats that he would kill her, the woman managed to exit the vehicle. The 35-year-old chased her down the street until passing pedestrians intervened and immobilised him.
Officers from the DI.AS. unit rushed to the scene and proceeded with his arrest. The injured driver was urgently transferred to Elpis hospital, where she is being treated in a state of severe shock. "There is no explanation for this incident and I do not think there is an explanation for an unprovoked attack of this kind," Dimoglídou emphasised.
During the hearing, the defence requested that a psychiatric examination be carried out, citing mental health problems of the accused. The 35-year-old had also submitted medical documentation certifying that he suffers from depression. The investigating magistrate and prosecutor rejected the request for release and ordered his remand in custody.
