The 43-year-old man accused of the murder of 45-year-old Stavrula Leventaki in Chania was remanded in custody by unanimous decision of the prosecutor and investigating magistrate, following testimony that lasted approximately four hours.
According to ertnews.gr, the defendant asked for forgiveness from the victim's relatives and claimed that everything happened following an intense altercation, without premeditation. He had previously admitted his criminal act to police, as the evidence against him was particularly serious.
The man was taken to the courts under strict protective measures. Earlier, relatives and friends of the unfortunate woman had gathered outside the building and strongly protested against the 43-year-old.
According to reports, the perpetrator is said to have attacked the victim multiple times inside the house where she lived and which he had rented from her, resulting in her death. The circumstances of the homicide have caused shock in the local community of Chania.
In addition to remand in custody, a trial date was set for the coming months.
