Former European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos has appealed to the Prosecutor of the Court of Cassation seeking to annul the European arrest warrant issued by Belgian authorities in connection with Qatargate.

Dimitris Avramopoulos, former European Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs, has appealed to the country's highest prosecutorial authority, seeking the annulment of the European arrest warrant issued against him by Belgium. His appeal concerns the high-profile corruption case named Qatargate.
According to reports from the newspaper Tá Néa, Mr Avramopoulos argues in his application that the warrant is unlawful. He denies committing any criminal act and points to deficiencies in the document issued by the Belgian authorities.
Specifically, the former commissioner claims that the warrant does not clearly state basic details required by Greek and European law. He contends that information is missing regarding when, where and under what conditions the acts attributed to him allegedly took place.
Additionally, Mr Avramopoulos raises the argument that the document does not adequately identify the national court decision or national warrant that formed the basis for issuing the European arrest warrant, something that is required by legislation.
The Qatargate case concerns allegations of corruption, bribery and participation in a criminal organisation involving European officials and lobbyists. According to investigations, they are alleged to have received illegal payments from Qatar and other countries with the aim of exerting influence over decisions of the European Parliament.
The competent judicial council of the Court of Cassation has now taken up the examination of the appeal by the former commissioner.
