During his regular weekly address, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis began with a reference to the bloody arson attack that took place in Thessaloniki against New Democracy figures, resulting in the death of one person. The head of government stressed that there is no ideological justification for such criminal acts and that the perpetrators will be identified and will face the consequences of their actions before justice.
Mr Mitsotakis made clear that the executive branch does not intend to succumb to lawbreaking and violent behaviour. At the same time, he appealed to the country's political landscape to move away from toxic and divisive discourse, as, he said, such rhetorical practices fuel extreme actions.
The Prime Minister referred to previous cases of dismantling terrorist organisations, such as November 17 and Golden Dawn, stating that with the same decisive manner the current perpetrators, who present themselves as revolutionaries, will be dealt with. The loss of a human life from the attack in Thessaloniki, as he noted, overshadows every other event of the period, as Greece has already paid a heavy price from blind violent action in the past.
