In Argos, two police officers have been detained following an incident in which they opened fire on a 20-year-old during a pursuit, resulting in serious head injuries. The officers face charges of attempted manslaughter with possible intent.
The young man remains on a ventilator in a critical condition. His mother stated to the media that her son suffers from autism and has a disability rating of 89%. According to her, seven bullets were found in his head, two of which doctors removed. "His body only functions with mechanical support," she said, adding that "his mind has stopped, I think."
The woman explained that the 20-year-old had left home without anyone noticing, as he had become warm and wanted to go for a swim. Upon returning, he realised he had left his driving licence at home, which frightened him. When police officers began following him, the young man panicked and attempted to get away.
At least 13 cartridge cases were found at the scene of the incident. A ballistic investigation will determine whether the shots were fired directly at the victim or upwards, as the defendants claim.
An official administrative inquiry has been ordered regarding the incident. The two police officers are to appear before the judicial authorities on Friday.
