The European Commission avoided commenting on developments in the case of former commissioner Dimitri Avramopoulos, referring the matter to Belgian justice authorities.

The European Commission provided responses regarding the case of former commissioner Dimitri Avramopoulos without, however, taking a substantive position. Commission representatives avoided making any comment on the ongoing judicial case, referring instead to the competent Belgian authorities.
Spokesman Balasz Ujvari stated that the Commission has taken note of the published reports, but cannot make comments as this concerns an ongoing criminal procedure. He added that no request for lifting immunity or for legal assistance has been submitted.
According to the Code of Conduct for Commissioners, former Commissioners are required to seek permission from the Commission for their activities during the first two years following their departure. Mr Avramopoulos had received permission for his participation in the NGO Panteri.
Chief spokesperson Paula Pinto clarified that permission for activities and alleged improper conduct constitute two different matters. The Commission had examined the matter in 2022 without finding a violation of the rules.
