A video prank from Russian pranksters, targeting National Security Chief Thanos Dokos, has exposed weaknesses in the security protocols followed by state officials.
Mr Dokos believed he was speaking with the national security adviser of Volodymyr Zelensky. According to sources from his circle, he not only heard his interlocutor but also saw him on his screen through a video call.
The connection was presented as secure; however, the technology used was not identified. The same sources noted that even private pranksters now have access to advanced artificial intelligence software, a fact that necessitates a review of security protocols.
The conversation concerned the Ukrainian drone that was detected in Lefkada and the implications that a similar incident would have on bilateral relations between Greece and Ukraine.
PASOK reacted strongly, emphasising that Mr Dokos's resignation is the only way forward. "The Prime Minister's adviser appears to be sharing assessments regarding the timing of elections in Greece," it said in a statement.
From the Prime Minister's office, sources spoke of "a hybrid nature attack with penetration of security protocols, through the use of exceptionally advanced Artificial Intelligence technology". They stressed that there was no leakage of confidential or classified information and that a programme for upgrading the security of communications is underway.
