A 42-year-old woman from Romania and her 61-year-old partner were arrested in Crete following the discovery of videos showing the torture of a 55-year-old Russian woman.

A 42-year-old woman from Romania and her 61-year-old partner are being held in custody in Greece, accused of torturing a 55-year-old Russian woman for approximately 30 days. The case was uncovered by Greek police when the alleged perpetrator reported the theft of her mobile phone, on which videos of the torture were found.
According to Digi24.ro, the investigation began on 1 July following a report of a stolen mobile phone. During the investigation, authorities discovered multiple videos that recorded extreme abuse, which led to immediate mobilisation to locate the victim. The 55-year-old was found two days later, bearing serious injuries across her entire body.
The Russian woman was taken to the police station in Heraklion, where she described what she had endured during her approximately month-long stay at the Romanian woman's house. She stated that she had been tied up with cable, but managed to free herself whilst the 42-year-old was sleeping and escaped from the residence.
Investigators determined that there were at least 11 recorded video incidents in which the Romanian woman appeared to be beating the 55-year-old. In one of the clips, the alleged perpetrator beats the victim with a club. In another video, the woman appears tied to the floor, apparently exhausted from the torture, whilst the 61-year-old man approaches her, hits her forcefully and then grabs her by the hair, which he cuts with an axe.
Greek media report that the motive behind the crimes was jealousy. The Russian woman had been living with the Romanian woman and her partner in the Agia Triada area, and one of the investigators' working hypotheses is that the alleged perpetrator suspected the victim of having a relationship with her partner.
The 42-year-old Romanian woman and the 61-year-old owner of the residence are being held by the Greek authorities.
