On Wednesday 24 June, the court proceedings begin for the death of a 17-year-old in Serres, who was beaten to death on the eve of Epiphany. The case shocked the nation and has now reached the stage of hearing before the Three-Member Court for Minors.
In the dock sits a 16-year-old, who is accused of killing his peer whilst in a state of mental calm. He remains in custody at a special institution for minors in Volos.
The crime was committed on the evening before Epiphany. Video footage from a security camera shows the 16-year-old and two other peers heading towards the city's central square. The cause appears to have been a girl.
During the investigation, the young perpetrator admitted that he struck his victim with "two or three punches and a knee", following a disagreement that had preceded the incident.
The autopsy revealed serious injuries in multiple areas of the body. Bruising was found on the forehead, ears, the area around the eyes, the lips, the chest, the hands, the fingers and the lower limbs. Dried blood was also found inside the nose, whilst there were scratches on the jaw, the neck, the collarbone, the chest, the elbows, the wrist, the back and the waist.
The evidence that has been gathered, together with the testimonies given by people who witnessed the incident, leads to the conclusion that the 17-year-old primarily sought to protect himself during the attack, without retaliating significantly.
The court will assess all available evidence and will decide on the fate of the minor who is accused.
