Serres: 16-year-old in dock for murder of 17-year-old Angelos
On Wednesday, 24 June, the trial of a 16-year-old began before the Juvenile Court, who faces charges in connection with the death of a 17-year-old in Serres. The incident occurred the night before Epiphany, on 6 January 2026.
The case had shocked the entire country. Video footage from a security camera showed the minor heading towards the central square with two peers. During the investigation, the young man had admitted that he struck the victim with punches and kicks, following an intense altercation over a girl.
The autopsy revealed serious injuries in multiple areas of the victim's body. Bruising was found on the forehead, ears, around the eyes, lips, chest, upper and lower limbs, and fingers. Dried blood was also found in the nose, whilst there were abrasions on the jaw, neck, collarbone, elbows, wrists, lower back and back.
The evidence that has been gathered, together with witness testimony, leads to the conclusion that the 17-year-old did not attack first, but attempted mainly to protect himself without substantially counter-attacking.
The accused faces the charge of intentional manslaughter in calm deliberation and is being held provisionally in a special juvenile detention facility in Volos.
